We work for the Community Dental Services in Suffolk, which provides NHS dental treatment for adults and children with additional needs and those from vulnerable groups. Effective communication is so important in healthcare settings, especially to help put patients at ease.
Many of the patients we see in our clinics and in the local communities use Makaton as a communication method. Our team were keen to learn more about Makaton so we arranged a team training session with our local tutor, Matthew Rowland.
The training session was such a success that four of our team decided to undertake further Makaton Training.
Our dental clinics in Suffolk have Makaton signs displayed in the waiting rooms and toilet doors, along with name badges for the team members. We have Makaton displays within the clinics, Makaton flip charts and books specific to dental visits, which we have found to be invaluable in aiding communication.
To ensure we all keep up to date with our signing we hold a regular refresher Makaton session within our team meetings along with a Sign of the Month, which goes out in our newsletter.
We hope in the future that more team members will undertake the Makaton Beginners' Workshop. We are currently working towards gaining the Makaton Friendly award.
