Tactile signing with blind children.

  • We will look at the importance of gesture and sign as a device of non-verbal communication in those who have sensory impairments and the role of the tactile/ kinaesthetic sense in communication.
  • We will look at the research on how those with a visual impairment benefit from signing and gesturing.
  • We will examine the terminology of touch cues, adapted signing, co-active signing and on-body signing.
  • We will discuss the strategies for how to teach tactile signing e.g. hand under hand in contrast with hand over hand.
