Duration
2 days or 4 x 2 hour 45 minute modules.
Recommended for
Recommended for family members, carers and workers who need to use Makaton at home and in their work. Also an essential part of entry criteria for Makaton Local Tutor Training.
Entry criteria
Participants need to have an interest in early communication skills.
Content
Based on the Foundation Workshop, this provides an introductory workshop for parents and carers who need to use Makaton in everyday situations, but with less theory and technical information. Signing instruction is given for stages 1-4, plus some Additional signs to help in practical situations. Makaton symbols are included and examples of their use are given. Teaching methods are discussed and developed.
At the end of the Parents and carers beginners' workshop, participants should have the confidence and skills to begin to use Makaton more fluently in their daily interactions with children and adults.
Accreditation
The Makaton Training for Parents and Carers (Route 2) is accredited as a national programme through the Open College Network. The programme has 3 units (6 credits) based on the Beginners' workshop and 3 units (6 credits) based on the Follow-up workshop.
