1a. Foundation workshop
The Foundation and Enhancement workshops provide training for professionals relevant to their work and together develop the necessary competencies. It is recommended that professionals attend both parts.
Duration
2 days or 4 x 3 hour modules.
Recommended for
Recommended for professionals who need to use Makaton in their work, as well as for others who wish a more in-depth training. Also an essential part of entry criteria for Makaton Regional Tutor Training.
Entry criteria
Participants need to have an understanding of early communication skills.
Content
The Foundation workshop provides a more detailed introduction to the Makaton vocabulary than the Beginners' Workshop for Parents and Carers (Route 2). Signs and Symbols from stages 1-4 and Additional Vocabulary are taught during practical sessions.
The lecture sessions cover current research into sign use, symbols design themes, the use and purpose of Makaton, and an overview of alternative systems of communication.
At the end of the Foundation workshop, participants should be able to use the early stages of the Makaton vocabulary with children, students and service users.
Accreditation
The Makaton Charity is working to achieve accreditation for the Foundation Workshop.
