The use of Makaton in protection and abuse

Entry criteria
Participants should have attended either route 1 or route 2 workshops before enrolling on this course.
Content
Designed to support professionals and carers of children and adults with severe communication and learning disabilities, this workshop builds on and expands existing knowledge of signing and symbols. The Makaton Charity is one of the major contributors to the development of the new guidelines, Action for Justice, for interviewing vulnerable and intimidated witnesses, recently published by the Home Office. These new developments are reflected in the vocabulary and lecture content of this workshop.
The course provides signing instruction for an extra 450 signs and symbols, such as:
- people and relationships
- growth and development
- abuse and bullying
- Places
- Disability, accident and illness
- Behaviour - general; emotional; sexual
The lecture content covers the following:
- teaching people how to protect themselves, taking into account their cognitive and linguistic abilities
- the impact of communication disabilities on the formal interviewing process
- the Action for Justice recommendations and how they may apply to people with limited communication skills
- disclosure of abuse and how we can help
- definitions of abuse
- legal issues and the implications of the Action for Justice document
