Fun and easy to learn

Melissa AdamsMelissa Adams, 3, has a rare genetic disorder called Angelman Syndrome.

Her mother, Kathryn Adams, tells her story:

"Melissa cannot speak and can only make some noises to communicate with us. I decided to take a course to learn Makaton as Melissa loves the programme Something Special on TV.

"After the two day course we started to use some signs at home, which Melissa thought very funny. But she has now picked up a few signs and tries to imitate what we do, she has perfected the sign for biscuit!

"Makaton is a fun way to sign and easy to learn. Melissa's teachers at nursery are also using Makaton within the group, and all the children join in with "good morning", "please", and "thank you". It has made Melissa more able to join in and I think will take away a lot of the frustration she feels when we don't know what she wants to say.

"It is such an easy sign language to use that everyone can learn and help to benefit people who may not otherwise have any way of communicating their needs."
