Erin and Briony

I am a HUGE Great British Bake Off fan and have enjoyed all the series so far, so imagine my excitement when my friend Briony announces she is taking part as one of the few that made it to the final 12!

A social media frenzy ensued, multiple clips of Briony’s comical facial expressions and tasty bakes, with Briony performing incredibly well in the tent, making it to the semi final: a very proud achievement!

I have known Briony since we were two years old. Five years ago, when I became a Makaton Tutor, Briony was teaching French at a school in Bristol and enrolled onto a Beginner’s Workshop I was teaching, with an aim to include it in her teaching. It was additionally interesting for me as a tutor to think creatively about how to adapt the Makaton signs for a signer with one hand. With support from The Makaton Charity it went really well.

Fast forward to December 2018 and Briony, with her new found celebrity status, had been asked to open the Thornbury Christmas lights! As a town with three special schools, including my son’s school, I couldn’t resist asking Briony to sign her speech in Makaton, which she did with support from the town’s mayor who is trying to help Thornbury to become a Makaton Friendly town. Fantastic advocating Briony!

Erin and Briony Briony then enthusiastically starts talking to me about an accessible recipe book and videos on her YouTube baking channel.. well watch this space!

I am just so pleased that Briony is so passionate about how baking has the potential to bring communities together, making sensory and skill-based fun accessible for all.
