The Winchester Service User group is a group of adults with learning disabilities who are employed by Southern Health NHS Trust. We work on developing 3 things: the skills of our group members, the health work in the locality we are in (The "North and mid-Hants team", and our NHS Trust (Southern Health).
The group meets once a month, and service users also help with staff interviews, peer reviews, workshops on developing websites, contributing to a research priorities project from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists - all sorts!
We have one lady MMS who uses Makaton as her main method of communication. She has just finished 4 months of co-chairing the meetings, and we now have "Sign Time" at every meeting and MMS teaches us all 5 signs each time!
The group voted on what song they wanted to sing. It was between "You've Got a Friend in me" from Toy Story, "This is Me" from the Greatest Showman, and "I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)". This last one got the most votes and everybody knew the song already which was helpful!
We learnt the signs together as a group, checking back with MMS to make sure that they were the right signs. I printed the signs and the words on pieces of paper, and people could either look at the paper or look at me (I'd had a bit of a practice beforehand so I could show the right signs to everyone!).
The video is to promote awareness of those with Learning Disabilities and alternative methods of communication!
