Early communication

Tia sitting in a garden

My sister Tia, 3, has Down's syndrome. She attends a regular day care centre.

She has been using Makaton since before her first birthday. We learnt it from speech and language therapists and courses. And from Mr Tumble! Now most of her family use Makaton: we found it very easy to pick up.

Tia now knows the signs for all her basic needs, and can say most of the words (badly!) as she signs.

She would never have been able to communicate as early as she did without Makaton, which would have frustrated her and us as it was obvious she knew what she wanted. Luckily she can now let us know most of the time!
