It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Mrs Jean Parratt has died. Jean was instrumental in the development of Makaton signing and training and was our first National Signing Advisor. She travelled the length and breadth of the UK and to other countries to lecture about and teach signing.
Many workshop participants and trainee tutors will remember Jean vividly. She demanded very high standards and accuracy of sign production and many will recall her mantra “tuck your thumbs in”!
Jean took on many challenges and these ranged from being a Makaton signing interpreter at the annual carol service at Winchester Cathedral, researching signs for much of the Makaton Resource Vocabulary, worked with illustrators on the development of line drawings of signs, translating traditional children’s nursery rhymes and much, much more.
Jean’s extraordinary contribution to the development and sharing of Makaton has and will continue to have a transformative effect for children and adults with communication difficulties and everyone who shares their lives.
Our thoughts are with her family at this time.
