Nurse Award Winners

Eve Hesketh, Alice Waddington and Emily Kavanaugh

Congratulations to Eve Hesketh, Alice Waddington and Emily Kavanaugh who have won the Andrew Parker Student Nurse of the Year award at the RCNi Nurse Awards.

The Student Learning Disability Nurses from Edge Hill University developed, piloted and raised awareness of the Makaton Healthcare Cards nationally after hearing Alice Glennon's story as a Makaton user who is yet to meet a medical professional who can talk her language!

"I think it’s fair to say we are still completely overwhelmed to say that we won the Andrew Parker Student Nurse of the Year award at the RCNi Awards. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone at the RCNi, the judges, everyone at Edge Hill University, The Makaton Charity, Amanda and Alice for believing in our Project and helping us to promote inclusive communication for everyone in healthcare! It truly means the world!

"We are so unbelievably proud to be able to represent learning disability nursing in our centenary year!"

In May 2019 Eve, Alice and Emily won the Student Innovation in Practice in the Student Nursing Times Awards 2019.

“We are over the moon to have won this award and want to thank Makaton, Amanda, Alice and everyone at Edge Hill University for all their support. By winning this award we are hoping that we have gained a bigger platform to enable greater communication for all across the NHS. We are extremely proud that this has already begun, with Alice’s paediatrician pledging to learn some signs for her next appointment.”
