Makaton is very much alive and kicking throughout Kuwait.
Mike Harris (Senior Tutor) and I have recently returned from a trip there, where we ran a Tutor training course for 18 people, ranging from from scientific engineers to teachers, which means that in total there are now around 50 Regional Tutors in Kuwait. Well done!
They use Arabic Makaton and we both enjoyed picking up a few of their signs.
We also had the pleasure of attending one of their many Day Care centres, where they take a functional approach to learning. We joined in with a singing and signing session and a parachute fun and games activity, as well as enjoying time in the soft play area. They make soap and all sorts of incredible crafts. Symbols are everywhere and signing is embedded into their day to day programmes.
Due to their thorough use of Makaton they were also awarded the First Makaton Friendly status in Kuwait. We are hoping that they will encourage more public facilities in Kuwait to use Makaton.
We look forward continuing our relationship with Makaton Kuwait and seeing them go from strength to strength, inshallah, as they would say.
Thanks for having us Kuwait!
