Bedale: Makaton Friendly Town

Huge land art of the Makaton Friendly logo

Staff and pupils at Mowbray School produced a huge land art of the Makaton Friendly logo to celebrate Bedale's achievement of becoming the UK’s second Makaton Friendly town.

From initial newspaper and Facebook information, over 20 organisations have enthusiastically come forward to learn Makaton.

Residents standing on the huge land art of the Makaton Friendly logoKaren Pickles, Deputy Head Teacher at Mowbray School, and a Regional Makaton Tutor, is delighted with the range of organisations wanting to learn Makaton. Training has been taking place in the church, a local farm attraction ‘Big Sheep, Little Cow’, the Town Hall, the fire station and the pub!

Karen said; ‘It has been so much fun meeting such a variety of people, all with a desire to communicate with Makaton users.’

The ‘Tour-De-Yorkshire’ cycle race came to Bedale in May, and the people of  Bedale were delighted and proud to be able to communicate with Makaton users through signs and symbols.
