2c. Local tutor training
Duration
Part 1: 3-day non-residential course
Part 2: Assessment
Role of the Makaton local tutor
The position of Makaton local tutor was created to provide centres or schools where Makaton is used with a trained tutor who can co-ordinate Makaton activities for their workplace.
Makaton local tutors identify those who require training, and many also deliver Makaton training for staff, parents and carers. In addition to supporting people who are implementing and using Makaton, a local tutor will support those people who need Makaton to communicate. Makaton local tutors may also support regional tutors in the delivery of Route 1, 3, 4, and 5 workshops (see Training).
Makaton local tutors are required to liaise with The Makaton Charity regularly regarding local issues, training needs and workshops, and to keep up-to-date with research, education trends and policy changes affecting Makaton use.
Entry criteria
Potential Tutors must first complete either the Makaton Parents and carers beginners' workshop and Follow-up workshop, or they may attend the Makaton Foundation and Enhancement workshops. They should also have at least nine to twelve months practical experience of Makaton in the workplace.
Part 1
Each prospective tutor has to attend a specific three-day training course provided by tutors who are licensed by The Makaton Charity. This training covers the design of the Makaton language programme, its implementation over the full range of disability, instructions related to the provision of Makaton workshops, and training in techniques to advance signing and symbol use.
Part 2
Participants must successfully pass part 1 in order to take part 2. Participants must deliver the first two modules of the Parents and carers beginners' workshop to a satisfactory standard.
Makaton local tutor's certificate
Once qualified, a certificate is issued with a Licence to Practice.
The licence
Licences are issued annually. Renewal is based on the tutor maintaining their skills and attending annual study days.
The Makaton Charity reserves the right to decline any prospective Makaton local tutor who may be found to be unsuitable for this role or who does not achieve the necessary criteria to qualify as a Makaton local tutor.
An information pack and application form is available from The Makaton Charity.
Accessibility
All lectures will be available on audio cassette to support people with communication and learning disabilities who wish to attend these workshops and courses. Large-print participant manuals will also be available.
