A real breakthrough

Harry Lawrence, 3, has a mannose-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency, which causes upper respiratory infections. As a result, his development has been severely delayed because he is ill every week and has poor stamina.
His mother, Louise Lawrence, tells his story:
“Harry had just turned three when he started watching Something Special. He finds it hard to communicate through speech so he related to Makaton really well and started using it himself to communicate with me.
“Harry attends a private day nursery. He is under special needs and receives one to one sessions with a special needs teacher who uses Makaton.
“I've picked up some Makaton through watching Something Special with Harry, and from the signs that Harry uses to communicate with me. Also, Harry's special needs teacher has given us a book of signs. So my Makaton knowledge is OK but I would love to learn much more.
“Makaton really helps, especially when we're out and about. Harry finds it very hard to understand what's going on around him, so by signing we get along and it keeps him calm. It's a real breakthrough for my son to communicate and understand through using Makaton.”
